## Research Priorities

### Finding 1

### Why It Matters

This segment appears to fit CLARK's intended strengths better than generic mass-market electronics. It values smaller production runs, iteration speed, firmware sensitivity, and trusted regional execution.

The current competitor set is best understood as overlapping analogs rather than direct equivalents.

### Why It Matters

CLARK's pitch should compare itself to recognizable categories, but it should not overclaim a fully empty competitive field until more validation is complete.

### Finding 3

The strongest current differentiation claim is not that CLARK has no competitors at all, but that its intended combination of distributed node structure, assembly, firmware support, and workforce training is unusual.

### Why It Matters

That wording is more defensible than claiming a fully uncontested market position.

### Evidence

The reviewed companies each overlap with one or two pillars, but the available evidence does not yet show one company matching CLARK's intended full combination and network model.

Use careful wording in investor-facing materials: CLARK sits at an unusual intersection of capabilities. Avoid stronger white-space language until the analog map is more complete.

### Finding 4

Hamilton-Buffalo is credible as an initial working corridor, but current evidence supports it as a plausible wedge rather than as a clearly superior corridor.

### Why It Matters

This keeps the current thesis alive without overcommitting. The corridor has real cross-border logistics and workforce signals, but the “best corridor” claim remains under-proven.

- Waterloo EDC describes Canada's Manufacturing Corridor as a partnership among Invest in Hamilton, London EDC, and Waterloo EDC.

- The UB Regional Institute's WNY Manufacturing and Tech Workforce Coalition is explicitly organized around employer demand and manufacturing-tech talent pipelines.
- Invest Buffalo Niagara markets sites in hydropower-linked zones, FTZ-linked advanced manufacturing locations, and fast access to Canada; New York's freight plan identifies the Peace Bridge as the state's highest-volume commercial border crossing in 2022.
- Alternative corridors also look plausible, including Hamilton-Waterloo within Canada's manufacturing corridor and the Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse NY SMART I-Corridor on the US side.

### Implication For CLARK

Keep Hamilton-Buffalo as the working corridor. Do not yet claim it is the best possible corridor. The next stage should compare it explicitly against at least Hamilton-Waterloo and Buffalo-Rochester-Syracuse, and possibly Detroit-Windsor depending on customer focus.

### Finding 5

The incentive thesis is directionally real, but it needs narrower wording. SR&ED, NRC IRAP, FedDev Ontario coverage, and NYPA hydropower programs are all real. START-UP NY should be removed from the active Buffalo thesis because the program is closed to new applicants as of January 1, 2026.

### Why It Matters

This preserves the real incentive story while removing a now-stale claim that would weaken credibility if left in place.

### Evidence

- CRA says SR&ED tax incentives are available where a business carries on business and conducts SR&ED in Canada, including Canadian-controlled private corporations and other Canadian corporations.
- CRA's investment tax credit policy states refundable ITC treatment depends on claimant type, with enhanced refundable treatment tied to qualifying CCPCs and certain rules for other corporations.
- NRC IRAP says eligible firms are incorporated, profit-oriented Canadian SMEs with 500 or fewer FTEs pursuing commercialization of technology-driven innovation.
- FedDev Ontario says it funds businesses and organizations across southern Ontario, explicitly including Hamilton and Waterloo in its catchment area.
- NYPA says Western New York Hydropower is available to eligible businesses within a 30-mile radius of the Niagara Power Project and that hydropower programs support job retention, creation, and capital investment.
- Empire State Development says the START-UP NY Program is closed to new applicants as of January 1, 2026.
- UB's START-UP NY page still describes the historical benefit structure, but that does not override the current statewide closure.
